Before I read this book I watched the film 'Lovelace' on Netflix and at that time didn't really know anything about 'Linda Lovelace'. For those who don't know 'Linda Lovelace' was a famous porn star who it's been said 'paved the way for other porn stars and helped build the porn industry to what it is today'.
In 1972 Linda was propelled to fame after she starred in the notorious porn flick 'Deep Throat'. Now you're probably thinking 'Why is Jo reading books about porn stars?' well, Linda's story runs deeper than just the run of the mill porn star story.
The film 'Lovelace' (2013) starring Amanda Seyfried as Linda and Peter Sarsgaard as Chuck Traynor (both were brilliant in the roles) was disturbing but after I read the book which Linda wrote with Mike McGrady, I realised that the film had only touched the sides. Linda had a tough life, she really went to hell and back many times and tried to escape and make a better life for herself. It really is a tragic story.
Which brings me onto this book (which I would say is very much an 18+ book). Linda (real name Linda Susan Boreman) was just like any other young girl, innocent, naive and full of dreams and all seemed well till she met Chuck Traynor. In the beginning (which is usually the case) Chuck was the perfect gentleman but as time went on he started to exert complete control of Linda with beatings and forced her into drugs and prostitution.
Linda tried to get help from her mother but they had a very strange relationship and there wasn't anybody that could help her especially back in those days when people tended to stay quiet.
This book is traumatic so be prepared. Linda went through some of the worst things you can go through as a woman and your heart goes out to her. She was used and abused over and over again and just wanted to be loved and lead a normal life.
Linda talks about her fling with Sammy Davis JR and there is some revelations that might raise a few eyebrows and also Hugh Hefner. I wasn't shocked that Hugh Hefner turned out to be more of a dirty old man than I imagined but still the 'stuff' that that guy is into.....it's all in the book and I believe what she says in it. The things she's described and admitted doing (some of the most horrible things) you can believe that she has spoke truthfully.
I don't want to go into too much detail here about the book because it would be better for you to read it and see what you think.
It's quite a story and quite a life.
Despite the film 'Deep Throat' being a huge success and making tons of money for all the men around Linda, Linda struggled to make ends meet.
Unfortunately Linda died after a car accident in 2002 aged 53. Strange also that Chuck Traynor died of a heart attack that same year aged 64.
